Massaging the scalp relieves tension the cranial muscles, this can help reduce headaches, and is very relaxing. A head massage could improve your concentration levels and help to relieve stress. A head massage helps to get rid of lactic acid caused by stress. If lactic acid builds up, it is very bad for the hair follicles. Having a head massage relieves tension in the head muscles so that the hair follicles are not squeezed by tight muscles. Both of these two benefits mean that a head massage is very good if you have problems with hair loss, or are trying to promote hair growth. Also a massage increases the blood flow to the area so it also improves circulation and helps the elimination of toxins and waste products from the body. An Indian head massage included the shoulders, neck, upper back and upper arms. The massage as a whole stimulates the lymphatic system and helps with the elimination of toxins. It helps to reduce muscle tension and this helps reduce back pain. Massage also helps to promote a good nights sleep and increases feelings of calm and wellbeing.

Kenyoku, dry bathing
In Japan, at the entrance to a temple, people cleanse themselves with water before entering. This is a method of cleansing using energy instead of water. It helps to release your negative energy, which is often in the from of worries, anxieties, stress, negative thoughts and emotions.
Sit down comfortably and close your eyes, with your right hands fingertips, touch your left shoulder, and go from your left shoulder in the air, above and across your body, to your right hip, breathe normally, and listen to your breath.
With your left hands fingertips, touch your right shoulder, and go from your right shoulder, in the air, above and across your body, to your left hip.
Again, with your right hands fingertips touch your left shoulder, and go from your left shoulder, in the air and above, across your body, to your right hip.
Then, with your right hands fingertips touch your left shoulder and trace a line down your arm to your fingertips, and brush off into the air from your fingertips.
With your left hands fingertips, touch your right shoulder, and trace a line down your arm to your fingertips, and brush off into the air from your fingertips.
And then repeat again, with your right hands finger tips touch your left shoulder and trace a line down your arm to your fingertips, and brush off into the air from your fingertips.
This is called dry bathing. It is a reiki way to release worries and fears, and to release holding onto them. When you are doing this, you can say to yourself, if you like, ‘I am releasing -(fill in with particular things)—- worries, and letting them go, I am letting go of the past, I am letting go of what does not assist me today, I am letting go of fears and stress, and moving on with confidence, hope and optimism. I am letting go of negative thoughts and anxieties. I am positive and optimistic.’
Ten minutes visualisation for relaxation and stress reduction:
Sit down comfortably. Close your eyes, I want you to imagine that you are walking along a beach, this could be a beach you know, or simply a stretch of sand, the sky above is a blue and bright, a spring day. To your right is the sea, it has small waves, the sea is clear glitters in the sunshine. Walk along the beach, the sand feels warm and soft under your feet, with every step, you feel more comfortable, and calmer. With every step, you can hear the noise of the waves, which is soothing, and feel a gentle breeze on your face. Walk along the beach, you can hear seagulls over head, and you can smell the sea air, and the sea weed along the shoreline. Continue walking along the beach, with each step, you are leaving the past behind you, with each step, you are releasing yourself from your worries, with each step you feel more relaxed. Continue walking along the beach, with each step you feel more confident, and stronger. As you do this, breathe normally, and listen to your breath. Walking along the beach, the sun shines on your face, and the warmth is soothing. Walking along the beach, you can hear the waves softly crashing to your right, over and over and over. Walking along the beach, there is only this moment of calm and comfort right now where everything is fine. After ten minutes, open your eyes, take time to ‘wake up’, especially if you need to drive anywhere, drink some water, enjoy the rest of the day.

Are you being more mindful?
The Beginner’s Mind
A zen buddhism concept which I love which helps you to get out of habits which are not good for you and realign you with your true self. This is called The Beginner’s Mind and means that you are letting go of preconceived opinions and are open to learn something new. If your mind, which is your thoughts and emotions, is ready to learn something new without prejudgment, without negative opinions, and without any opinions and is ready to learn. This is being open and responsive to new ideas.
Zen buddhism talks of being empty, having an empty mind. Being empty of these things which hold us back from learning something new. Being empty of these things which prevent us from starting afresh, putting away habits which are not good for us, and habits which prevent us from moving on, habits which sometimes we don’t even know why we keep doing these things and we need to look with new eyes and with an empty, open beginners mind.
How can we cultivate a beginner’s mind? Meditation, Mindfulness, Reiki, are three ways which help us to cultivate a beginner’s mind. More ways include: becoming less negative, especially when you are listening to people telling you something that you haven’t heard before. Self reflection, looking at your habits, and asking yourself why you do some things repeatedly, especially if these habits have caused you problems in the past. You could keep a journal, and them this could help to highlight when you repeat behaviours and thoughts and emotions which are holding you back, preventing you from moving on, preventing you from starting afresh, or preventing you from finding a new direction, or from finding yourself again.
Having a beginners mind will help you find more options, so that when you want to do something or be able to bring something new into your life, you will be able to think of more ways to do whatever it is your want. With a beginner’s mind, you will be more open to other people’s new ideas, and suggestions. With a beginner’s mind, you will be able to find more solutions when you have any problems.
Often the most limiting thing in this world is they way we limit ourselves and hold ourselves back. And if you have had other people around you who have been holding you back and limiting you their negative beliefs and comments about your abilities become internalised. Having a beginner’s mind helps you to reassess any negative ideas and beliefs about yourself. And it is true and we can start afresh any time we want to. We can find our path and start a new path whenever we want to.
Having a beginner’s mind opens us up to new possibilities. When we are looking for something and we think negatively about whatever comes our way. This prevents us from seeing something new that has good potential for us. Not being able to hear without prejudging and being too quick to judge as well, often prevents us from allowing someone else to help us. It prevents us from allowing something new to begin and to be available in our life. Instead hold back on judgements, hold back on your own ideas, your thoughts, and simply hear, listen and observe.
Cultivating a beginner’s mind helps us to see things from other people’s perspectives. This helps in relationships, it helps to prevent arguing, helps when having discussions and when trying to find solutions in discussions with other people. Being receptive to hearing someone else’s perspective and acknowledging their point of view without being judgemental helps to build relationships and helps friendships grow stronger.
If you are looking for a new job, or something new in your life or if you are at a cross roads and needing a new direction, having a beginner’s mind will open up many new possibilities. Things you didn’t think you could do and things you had not thought of doing before. It helps to bring new opportunities into your life.
